A Strategic Perspective on Red Star, White Star
by Christopher Askwith

Soviet Union

The Soviet Union, as in Axis in Allies, is fighting on the critical front line. Of course, this time she is struggling to control Europe and wrest it from the Americans and British.

The Soviets must do two things: acheive total control over Europe, including Finland-Norway, and eliminate the potential for the Allies (US/UK) to land there again. While the latter goal may be difficult to achieve, given the superior air and naval resources at hand for the West, the Soviets must not allow the Allies to get a permanent foothold on the Continent.

In the long run, the Soviet Union will be required to conquer Great Britain, and tag-team with the Japanese to invade North America.

Japan

Until she is in a position to invade Africa and North America, the Japanese can do little but help the Russians eliminate the Allied threat in Europe, mainly by bringing naval units around Argentina to destroy transport convoys.

Japan must invade Australia and secure the Indian ocean. Then she must enter Africa and steal all those precious IPCs from the British. Eventually, she may be required to help the Soviets invade North America, mainly by invading territories that the Soviets can reinforce on their turn from forces in Soviet Far East.

United States of America

The US must protect Alaska and the western shores of North America from harm. Outside of that, she has little purpose in trying to struggle against both Japan and the Soviets for control of the Pacific, at least not until after the Soviet Union is no longer a factor and Asia is mostly in Allied hands.

The US must use her considerable resources to quickly reinforce remaining Allied territories on Europe. The Americans and British must cooperate to liberate Europe and conquer the Soviet Union, one territory at a time. Usually, the British player will make the actual attack and seize the territory, particularly if it is outside the range of Japanese armour and aircraft, then the Americans will move their hordes in to keep the area from being lost in a Soviet counter-attack.

The Americans will probably also be required to help keep Africa free from Japanese forces.

United Kingdom

Britain will initially suffer the most at the hands of the Japanese, much as the Axis caused her a great deal of grief in Axis and Allies. The Japanse menace Australia and Africa simultaneously.

The British must do two things at first: protect Africa and secure Germany from the Soviets. By tag-teaming with the Americans, she can invade an enemy territory then watch as the Yanks rush their masses of troops in to secure it.

It may be that the British will have to evacuate Australia and let it fall to the Japanese, particularly if Africa is threatened. the naval units will do more good in the Suez or at the Cape of Good Hope than sitting around Sydney. The British player should build an Industrial Complex in Egypt to build land units to strike into Asia and the Soviet Union.
