The Pool Hall Principle

A quality billiards player should have one question on his/her mind when chalking up the cue stick: Where will the cue ball lie after my next shot? In other words, will the cue ball be lined up for me to make another shot or in case I miss could I be handing my opponent an easy shot?

The Axis & Allies Player should apply the same question: Where can I get the most effective kill and yet still be set up, so the next round I have the greatest potential to strike without compromising my defense?

Two Scenarios

UK 1. The Germans have conquered Egypt. However luck smiles upon you and you take it back using the troops from India, including the fighter. Where should you land the fighter to be out of harms way and yet still have the greatest potential for the next round? I used to land the fighter in Kenya, along side my foot soldier. Alas, that places the fighter too far away from Karelia, Russia and the India sz. It *may* be best to land the fighter in Italian East Africa. From IEA, I can reach Russia, Karelia and the India sz.

Germany 1. You conquer Egypt and you take out the British fleet. The Luftwaffe is only down one fighter and the Eastern side of Europe seems to be secure. Decision time. Where do you land your planes? Well, here are just a few items to consider:

1) What are the potential moves of the British player, i.e., will the India sz Transport move within striking range?
2) Could the US player buy 1 or 2 transports in the E.US sz? Could this be an effective use for the bomber?
3) Could the troops in Africa possibly use air support next round?
4) Are my fighters needed for defense on any front?

There is no "one-size-fits-all" solution to these questions. But that's what makes this a fun game. I guess I'll see you at the pool hall for the next round of Axis & Allies.
